The month we've spent in Central Saskatchewan has been absolutely freezing. I can't remember a time, let alone a month, in my life when I have experienced such a nasty, frigid winter like the one we are experiencing here in Prince Albert, SK. We have had mornings where the temperatures have dipped into the -40 celsius range or lower, and daytime highs have only reached -25 C. Windchill warnings add to the deep freeze, dropping temperatures so low they suck the breath right out off your already frozen lungs. There isn't much here to break the unrelenting winds that sweep through the snow drifted prairies of Saskatchewan. The wind here is nothing like back home in the foothills of Alberta. When the wind picks up in Calgary it usually brings warm pacific air to the area. This is called a chinook, and can cause the temperature to reach heights of +20 C in January. Here there is nothing but arctic air cold enough to make a polar bear shiver.
It hasn't been all cold though. One day, just over a week ago, reached a balmy +6.1 C. It was a long awaited relief from a city in the grips of "Old Man Winter" himself. It was short lived then but things are warming up as today is only -9 C with the forcasts trending up for the rest of our stay here.
Not much precipitation has collectively fallen while we've been here. It seems to stay to the south of us hitting the province's largest city, Saskatoon. We do get a lot of dustings overnight. The last three nights it has snowed less than a centimeter at a time. These slight flurries are to continue Friday and Saturday as well.
Hopefully there will be some more exciting winter weather once we are back in Alberta.
I can't wait!
